Dental Care for Seniors

As you age, your body becomes more susceptible to injury and disease. This is not different for oral health care. Your teeth and gums are more likely to suffer from injury, gum disease and decay, as you grow older.  Because poor oral health can lead to problems with your overall health it is important that any dental issues not be ignored.

Taking simple steps to brush your teeth thoroughly and floss after every meal become increasingly important and you age – but we understand that these tasks may also become more difficult as you age. Conditions such as arthritis or neurological issues can easily make flossing and brushing painful. You may benefit from the use of an electric toothbrush or a pre-laced flosser to reach your back teeth.

The risk for gum disease generally increases with age. Gum disease has been linked to an increased risk for heart disease and other health conditions.  The pain that accompanies tooth decay and gum disease can lead to poor nutrition if patients have difficulties eating.

Beyond brushing and flossing after each meal, you should also be sure to visit the dentist twice a year of examinations and cleanings.
