Is a Dental Bridge Right for You?

Are you missing one or more teeth? It can make it difficult to enjoy your favorite foods, make you feel self-conscious when talking to people, and can even make it difficult to speak so that people can understand you. It can be bad for your oral health and the health of your jaw. It can even affect your facial muscles and make you look older. A great solution for missing teeth is a dental bridge.

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is made up of an artificial tooth to replace your missing tooth (also known as a “pontic”). The pontic is attached to the abutments – the crowns that fit on the teeth on either side of where the pontic goes that help anchor the bridge in place.

It may take a few weeks to get your bridge. Your dentist will have to prepare your teeth for the crowns, which may involve some reshaping. An impression of the area missing the tooth will be taken and sent to a lab for the creation of your permanent bridge. If you opt for an implant-supported bridge, the process can take several months, as the implant and the jaw bone need time to fuse.

Why choose a dental bridge?

Dental bridges have many advantages. They are easy to take care of – you just treat them as you would your natural teeth. If you take good care of your bridge, by brushing, flossing, visiting your dentist at least twice a year, avoiding tobacco products, eating healthy foods, and avoiding foods that are hard or sticky, it is possible for your bridge to last 15 years or even longer. If you choose an implant-supported bridge, it can help to keep your jawbone healthy. And of course, another advantage is that you can speak and eat comfortably without worrying about that missing tooth.
