At Soft Touch Dentistry in Brighton and Newton, Massachusetts, we believe good habits make a big difference, especially when it comes to preventative dental care. Dr. Nazila Bidabadi, a Harvard clinical instructor and experienced cosmetic dentist, leads our team that welcomes you and every member of your family. We’re here to answer common questions like this one.
Why Morning Brushing Matters
Overnight, bacteria build up in your mouth. That film you feel on your teeth in the morning is called plaque. When you eat breakfast without brushing first, those bacteria feed on sugars and produce acids that can lead to tooth decay.Â
Brushing before breakfast helps remove that buildup and adds a protective layer of fluoride from your toothpaste.
Concerns About Brushing After Eating
If your breakfast includes acidic foods or drinks like orange juice, toast, or coffee, brushing right afterward can actually wear down your enamel. This is because acid temporarily softens the enamel, making it more vulnerable to abrasion.Â
The American Dental Association recommends waiting at least 30 minutes after eating before brushing to avoid damaging your enamel.
What’s the Best Routine?
For most people, brushing before breakfast is the safer choice. It removes bacteria and primes your teeth for the day ahead. If you prefer to brush after eating, rinse your mouth with water first and wait a bit to let your enamel recover.Â
Either way, consistency matters. Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing once daily will go a long way in protecting your smile.
