The Best & Worst Thanksgiving Foods for Your Teeth

Man holding Thanksgiving turkey with family at the dinner table As you prepare for a festive Thanksgiving meal, consider how certain foods can affect your oral health. At Soft Touch Dentistry, our dentists encourage you to enjoy the holiday while making smart choices to maintain good oral health.

You don’t have to give up your favorite Thanksgiving dishes. Choosing the right foods and portion sizes can make a big difference.

Turkey: The Tooth-Friendly Tradition

Thankfully, turkey, the centerpiece of most Thanksgiving dinners, is excellent for your teeth. It’s packed with protein and doesn’t contain starches that could contribute to tooth decay.

Just make sure to floss after the meal, as turkey fibers can easily lodge between your teeth.

Side Dishes: Choose Wisely

While the turkey may be safe for your smile, some traditional sides are not. Stuffing, for example, is typically high in sugar and can stick to your teeth, increasing the risk of cavities.

On the other hand, fresh vegetables like carrots and green beans are excellent choices. They require more chewing, stimulate saliva production, and naturally clean the mouth.

Sauces and Cranberries: Sweet Versus Savory

Cranberry sauce is a delicious Thanksgiving staple but is usually loaded with sugar, which can cling to teeth, promoting decay. If you can’t resist, try a small serving and drink plenty of water to help wash away the sugar.

Gravy, while savory, is a better option as it’s less likely to stick to teeth and cause issues.

Desserts: A Sugary Dilemma

It’s hard to say no to Thanksgiving desserts, but for the sake of your teeth, be selective.

Pumpkin pie, for example, contains vitamin A, which is good for your gums. However, it’s also often brimming with sugar. Choose a small slice and follow it with a glass of water or a quick tooth brushing.

Beverages: Best and Worst Choices

When it comes to drinks, plain water is your best friend. It helps cleanse the palate and reduces the acidity in your mouth, which can erode enamel.

Try to avoid sugary beverages and limit alcohol consumption, which can dry out your mouth and reduce the saliva needed to protect your teeth.
