How to Choose a Family Dentist

check up Choosing a dentist for your children is important. Those first visits to the dentist can set children up for a lifetime of caring about their dental health (or not) and being afraid of the dentist throughout their lives (or not). Here are some things to look for when making that all-important decision about who will care for your children’s teeth.

Do they have a rapport with your children (and with you)?

We have all been around people who don’t seem to care for children – and it shows. These aren’t the people you want caring for your children’s teeth. The right children’s dentist will be gentle with your children, while being able to answer their questions and allay their fears. And, they should be only too happy to answer your questions as well. You and your children should never be made to feel as if you are just another appointment on the books.

Do they know how to talk to children?

Your child’s dentist should know how to impress upon children the importance of keeping their teeth healthy, without nagging them or scaring them. It may be unlikely that a trip to the dentist is ever “fun,” but the experience should be made as pleasant as possible so that your children aren’t afraid to go back.

Will they be there when you need them?

We all know that children can be accident prone, and damaged teeth should be taken care of right away. You need a dentist who offers emergency hours, for your peace of mind and your child’s health. And, having hours that work with your schedule – such as during lunchtime, early morning, and evening – is a plus as well.

Good oral health habits start early, and having the right dentist from the start can set your children up for healthy and beautiful teeth throughout their lives. You can rest assured that when you choose Soft Touch Dentistry to be the first dental office to treat your children that you have made the right choice. Call today to make an appointment for your children, at either the Brighton Office at (617) 782-9250 or the Newton Office at (617) 332-8146.
