Take Care of Your Teeth, Especially While Pregnant

istock 1134321293 When you are pregnant, you have a lot on your mind! And you may think that dental care can wait until after the baby is born. However, taking care of your oral health is just as important now as it ever is. Don’t skip out on your visit to the dentist!

Why you can’t skip the dental appointment

As soon as you see your dentist for your checkup, you should mention that you are pregnant (or even if you only think you are pregnant). He or she will want to check for a condition called “pregnancy gingivitis.” This is caused by the hormonal changes of pregnancy, and can result in tender gums. If it is untreated, it can lead to gum disease.

Morning sickness or diet changes can also increase the amount of acid in the mouth, which can increase the risk of tooth decay. If your dentist sees signs of increased tooth decay or gum tenderness, you may need to come in for cleanings more than usual.

Your dentist will also want to check for a condition known as “pregnancy tumors.” Although the name is pretty scary, these “tumors” aren’t cancerous, and are only a swelling of the gums in between the teeth. These tumors often appear during the second trimester, and are caused by excess plaque on the teeth, which your dentist can remove.

Why it is safe to see your dentist while pregnant

It is natural to be concerned about medications, anesthetics, and x-rays when you are pregnant. However, your dentist will be able to tell you what medications are and aren’t safe to use, and anesthetics and dental x-rays are safe for both you and baby. Of course, you can always talk to your dentist if you are still concerned.

When you are expecting a baby, it is a very exciting time in your life, and you’ve probably got a to-do list that is about a mile long. But taking care of your teeth should always be a priority. Call Soft Touch Dentistry for an appointment today, at either the  Brighton Office at (617) 782-9250 or the Newton Office at (617) 332-8146.
