Stock up the pantry
You probably won’t feel like eating a big bowl of popcorn or a chewy steak after your procedure – but you should eat. Eating healthy food can help you to heal faster and to feel better. However, you probably won’t feel like cooking, either! Stock up the pantry and fridge with soft, easy-to-prepare foods, such as soups, applesauce, yogurt, rice, mashed potatoes, and oatmeal.
Take some time to relax
It can be tempting to think of a dental procedure as “no big deal.” However, any medical or dental procedure is a big deal! Take some time off of work, get some help around the house, and allow yourself to nap when you need to. You might even be advised not to do any heavy lifting or driving for a while after your procedure.
Follow your dentist’s instructions
Your dentist may advise you to avoid certain things – such as not using a straw for the first few days after your procedure – and you may not see the point. But you should definitely follow any instructions you are given to prevent serious problems and to let your body heal (sucking on a straw can loosen any blood clots that formed after dental surgery, causing pain and even infection).
Know when to contact your dentist
If something just doesn’t seem right after your dental procedure, call your dentist. This might include an incision that comes open, the inability to keep fluids down, or any signs of infection.
